Following revelations in the media that police have routinely disregarded affidavit requirements when taking sworn statements, the LIV reminds members that the Guidelines for Oaths, Affidavits and Declarations (adopted from material supplied by the Honorary Justice Office, Department of Justice) are published on the LIV website.

The LIV and Victorian Women Lawyers jointly hosted this event to celebrate the International Women’s Day Centenary 1911-2011.
About 360 people attended to hear the keynote address by Chair of the Sydney Peace Foundation and former SBS broadcaster Mary Kostakidis. The address was on the topic of why society needs individuals such as Julian Assange with the courage and conviction to expose wrongdoings.
The event also raised money for the Sydney Peace Foundation, which has awarded Mr Assange its medal for Peace with Justice.

Opening of the Legal Year 2011

The legal profession celebrated the opening of the legal year for 2011 on Monday 31 January 2011 with a number of church and community events.
LIV President Caroline Counsel did a reading at the ecumenical observance at St Paul’s Anglican Church. CEO Michael Brett Young attended the Red Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and councillors attended events at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in South Melbourne and the Community observance in Queen’s Hall, Parliament House.
President of the Victorian Court of Appeal, the Hon Justice Chris Maxwell, spoke at the International Commission of Jurists community event at Parliament House, which was also supported by Corrs Chambers Westgarth and the Law Institute of Victoria.
He spoke about the importance of judicial independence as a foundation of the rule of law.

LIV and VWL host AFL forum on Violence Against Women

The final LIV President's Leadership Lunch for the year celebrated White Ribbon Day and discussed the topic of Tackling Violence Against Women.
Gary Pert, CEO of the Collingwood Football Club and Adrian Anderson, General Manager, Football Operations of the AFL participated in a panel discussion with Diana Taylor, Director of the Geelong Football Club.
LIV President Steven Stevens said the legal profession too often saw the consequences of violence against women. He congratulated the AFL for taking a leadership role in influencing community values on acceptable behaviour by young men towards young women.
The lunch was held in association with Victorian Women Lawyers and supported by Pitcher Partners.
Those attending watched a confronting new DVD made by the AFL and Victoria Police on the issue.

Law Institute of Victoria: Diversity Presentation

The LIV hosted a Diversity Luncheon today, sponsored by Freehills. The lunch heard from Eric Mayne, recently retired from ASX, about steps taken by the ASX to promote diversity in boards of listed companies, and the response of the corporate sector.
LIV President Steven Stevens welcomed guests from the legal, government and corporate sector.

Thursday 28 October 2010: Political parties respond to LIV call
On 2 September 2010 the LIV issued a “Call to the Parties” in the lead-up to the 27 November state election, seeking political parties’ views on 11 key justice issues. Responses were received from the government, Coalition and the Victorian Greens. The November LIJ includes extensive election coverage and commentary on these responses and includes a scorecard showing how the LIV assessed the responses to the LIV’s position on the 11 issues.

The LIV today launched its policy platform – Advocating Justice for All, as well as its State Election Call to the Parties.
LIV President Steven Stevens and Chairman of the Access to Justice Committee Mark Woods spoke to an audience including representatives from the State Government, Courts, VicBar, PILCH, FCLC, VLA and the Human Rights Law Resource Centre.

Serving Up Insights with Deputy Premier and Attorney General Rob Hulls

LIV President Steven Stevens hosted a breakfast address by Victorian Attorney General Rob Hulls on the topic of “Tough on Crime: the Future is Smarter”.
The breakfast was attended by over 100 representatives from the Courts; Government; law firms; the legal aid sector, Victoria Police, the OPI and DPP.
It was held to address law and order issues in the lead up to the Victorian election on 27 November 2010.

Children, Sex and the Media

The LIV hosted a Serving Up Insights breakfast on Friday 16 July to look at the issue of early sexualisation of children in the media.
Julie Gale, director of Kids Free 2B Kids, and Professor Elizabeth Handsley, Professor of Law at Flinders University, discussed the psychological impact of the imagery on children; recommendations of the Senatre Committee's Inquiry into sexualisation of children in the media and the lack of action on those recommendations; and potential legal remedies to the problem.
