CPD Rules and Requirements
All legal practitioners who hold a Victorian Practising Certificate are required to complete 10 hours of CPD activities every CPD year (even if the holder practises interstate or overseas). The CPD year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
The compulsory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for legal practitioners in Victoria first commenced operation on 1 April 2004 pursuant to the provisions of the Continuing Professional Development Scheme Rules 2004 (CPD Scheme Rules 2004). The CPD Scheme Rules 2004 were introduced by the LIV, in its capacity as an RPA, pursuant to Section 72 of the Legal Practice Act 1996.
New CPD Rules 2008 commence operation on 1 April 2008.
How do I gain units?
CPD units may be gained through:
- Attending seminars and lectures = 1 CPD unit per hour (maximum 6 units per day)
- Preparing and presenting law seminars = 1 CPD unit per hour (maximum 5 units)
- Publishing articles in law journals (1000 words) = 1 CPD unit (maximum 5 units)
- Private study of video and audio tapes = 1 CPD unit for 1 hour of private study (maximum 5 units)
- Member of relevant legal committee or taskforce = 1 CPD unit for two hours or more engaged in committee work (maximum 3 to 5 units. Refer to Rule 4.2(e))

- Onced logged in click on the My LIV tab to access the My LIV portal

Towards National CPD Guidelines
The discussion paper Towards National CPD Guidelines, was developed during 2006 by the National CPD taskforce with the intention of establishing a nationally consistent model to which all state and territory-based CPD models may eventually conform.
