Breakfast Matters is about a peek into the future and how the legal profession can best use this knowledge to its advantage.


The LIV invites its members and guests to meet with Victoria’s new Small Business Commissioner, Geoff Browne over our first Breakfast Matters event for 2012.

Appointed in October 2011, Geoff will reflect on his last six months in the role and share his view on current issues affecting the Office of the Victorian Small Business Commissioner. Geoff will also reveal the agenda and future direction for his Office.

About the speaker:

Geoff Browne, Victorian Small Business Commissioner
Prior to his appointment as Victoria’s Small Business Commissioner, Geoff was Deputy Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria for 6 years. He worked with the Commonwealth Prices Surveillance Authority and led its inquiry into bank fees and he has worked within the industry policy and program areas for the Victorian Government and led the Port Privatisation Unit.  In the private sector, he worked in the telecommunications, finance, and ecommerce sectors.  Geoff holds a Master’s Degree and First Class Honours Degree in Economics and a Graduate Diploma in Company Secretarial Practice.

Topic Points Include:

  • Evolution of functions provided, by the Office of the Small Business Commissioner, over the past 9 years. Profile and trend the 10,000 disputes received since inception, including; Causes of disputes under the Retail Leases Act.
  • Observations on the implementation of Farm Debt Mediation, including; some of the transitional issues arising.
  • Geoff will also comment on the emergence of the National Small Business Commissioners across the country.
