Building a Balanced Young Lawyer
Work/Life balance is a term that gets thrown around all too much these days. But what does work/life balance mean for a young lawyer. Does it mean leaving the office before 8pm? Or not looking at work emails over the weekend? The YLS is committed to providing practical skills, tips and tricks to young lawyers so that they can achieve work/life balance in a meaningful way. On Tuesday 24 April 2012, the YLS is hosting its first session of its Health and Wellbeing Series which will provide practical tips on how to address your difficult coworker or client. Difficult personalities in law firms are like black jellybeans - there is one in every pack – so make sure you are properly equipped to deal with them. In April 2012, the Professional Development Committee launched its Short Story Competition to provide young lawyers an opportunity to step away from legal drafting and the humdrum world of bullet points, defined terms and footnotes. The competition closes by 29 June 2012 so there is ample time to get your creative juices flowing and build a better, balanced lawyer.
March 2012
Hello Autumn. Hello New Law Graduates.
The change in season marks the true beginning of law graduates' foray into the legal profession. By now you have hopefully attended a few firm functions and have begun to familiarise yourself with your new work team. The YLS is here to assist you with your transition into the legal profession. On 7 March 2012, the Professional Development Committee is hosting its Hot Topic seminar on Navigating Your First Years of Practice. Learn tips about business development, how to manage your career expectations and how to advance your legal career. On 21 March 2012, the YLS is hosting its Orientation for New Lawyers where I will be presenting about my experiences as a lawyer and as President of the YLS. I am really looking forward to meeting the next intake of law graduates who are the future of our profession.
February 2012
Happy New Legal Year!
The YLS is particularly excited about 2012. This year, we are aiming to have more new lawyers engaged with our section. We want to see you at our events, at our committee meetings and (short of stalking you) at any place that we can. The Social Committee has been toiling away to create a new, signature event where you can dress to the nines and network likes it's nobody's business. The Community Issues Committee has their annual lawn bowls fundraising event in late February to farewell summer, and the Professional Development Committee has their first seminar of the Hot Topics Series in early March to assist new lawyers in their career and career progressions. I extend a heartfelt welcome to you to come to these events, get involved, and be a part of what is already shaping up to be a fantastic year.
