About the Institute of Legal Executives
There are many levels of membership of the Institute. Students and those starting a legal career can join, as well as more senior persons. All Applications are ratified by the Council, each being treated on its merits. The Council reserves the right to refuse membership to any Applicant, determine the appropriate category of membership, admit a person who has not enrolled in a recognised course[1] to any category of membership, and to vary membership requirements from time to time. The highest level is that of Fellow of the Institute. A Fellow can administer Oaths and take Declarations in Victoria pursuant to the Evidence Act 1958 (Victoria), and only Fellows have Institute voting rights. The Institute only recognises use of the term "Legal Executive" by a Fellow of the Institute[2]. Many members join when starting their legal career, and work their way up to become Fellows. Persons in all categories of membership are required to comply with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Institute, and with the Institute's Code of Conduct. Continuing Professional Development points also apply to most categories of membership.
