Addtional LIV Membership Benefits

Accredited Specialisation

LIV Specialist Accreditation is an industry based qualification available to LIV members who have more than five years’ experience in the practice of law. The qualification recognises the member’s high level of expertise and knowledge in a particular area of law and is attained on completion of a rigorous academic program.
  • Accredited Specialist fee (per specialisation) - $400 per annum
  • Leave of absence fee (per specialisation) - $110 per annum

LIV Mediator Directory

This is an online directory available to the legal profession and public. A directory listing provides mediators with the opportunity to be selected directly by the parties to a dispute, or by their lawyers or the courts.
  • Mediator fee per member - $231 per annum

Limitation of Liability Scheme (LLS)

LIV members qualifying under the Scheme and who have nominated to participate can benefit by having their occupational liability capped to either $2 million or $10 million, depending on the size of the firm, revenue and the firm’s insurance policies. Changes effective from 1 July 2013.

The LLS will:
  1. allow for incorporated legal practices to join
  2. operate in multiple jurisdictions, excluding Tasmania
  3. have a lower monetary ceiling of $1.5 million
  • LLS fee per member - $105 per annum

Legal Referral Service

The Legal Referral Service provides assistance to members of the public requiring legal advice and information. It averages 3,000 phone and online requests per month, and provides a great business opportunity for legal firms across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Participating firms agree to provide a 30 minute enquiry interview free of charge. Fees to join the service are calculated on the number of partners in the practice:
  • Sole practitioners - $310 per annum
  • 2 - 5 partners - $475 per annum
  • 6+ partners - $630 per annum

Your Payment Options

Membership renewals can be paid by credit card, cheque, cash or money order. Cheques should be made payable to the Law Institute of Victoria.
