This month the Young Lawyers Section hosts the third annual Victorian Golden Gavel Competition. With only 24 hours to prepare, 10 young lawyers will showcase their public speaking skills with five minute speeches on hilarious yet hard hitting topics. This is quickly becoming one of the standout events on the young lawyers calendar and will be a very entertaining night. Make sure you get your ticket. Also in May, we launch the first Later Lawyers Networking lunch for 2011 and host our Money Money Money seminar. This seminar is about planning your financial future and cover topics such consolidating debt, how to save and investing. Don't miss out.

Did you know the YLS has a specific Regional & Suburban Young Lawyers Committee (RSYLC) which provides a vital support network for young lawyers practising in regional Victoria and suburban Melbourne. Our objective is to assist you in developing your personal and professional skills and assist you in expanding your networks and making friends. Short Story Competition
Looking for a way to express your creative side? LIV Young Lawyers has launched the inaugural Short Story Competition. Submissions must be 750–1500 words and have a "legal flavour". Entries are due by 30 June. Great prizes to be won including publication of the winning entry in the final 2011 edition of the Young Lawyers Journal in December. The YLS Professional Development Committee has introduced a new feature to bring to readers each month. This feature is aimed at highlighting the extensive career opportunities available to law students and young lawyers. A profile will be delivered to members to showcase the many and varied opportunities in law. This month we are feature Rhiannon Hough, Judges' Associate, Supreme Court of Victoria. Read more (pdf).

Commercial Law Section (CLS)
IP/IT Committee and Trade Practices Committee
The CLS would love to have more young lawyers involved in its IP/IT and trade practices work. Why not come along to one of these Committee meetings and find out what these Committees are about. It could be a great way to develop your skills in these areas and meet other professionals who have already chosen to specialise in these fields. The LIV President's Blog ran a post on Surviving and Thriving in the Law, discussing the Health and Wellbeing seminars that Young Lawyers are running. This has been our most popular blog post so far, which tells us that all of our members have an interest in general physical and mental health.
