The first edition of the Young Lawyers Journal for 2011 will arrive on members' desks, we launch our new Health and Wellbeing seminar series and host our annual Targeting Traineeships seminar. This year the YLS is hosting a new series focusing on personal sustainability. The series covers three crucial topics relevant to the health of new lawyers. The series focuses on prevention and intervention.

Information for Regional & Suburban Young Lawyers
Working in regional or suburban Victoria? Did you know the YLS has a specific Regional & Suburban Young Lawyers Committee (RSYLC) which provides a vital support network for young lawyers practising in regional Victoria and suburban Melbourne. Our objective is to assist you in developing your personal and professional skills and assist you in expanding your networks and making friends. Do you need upskilling?
The April to July calendar of CPD seminars specifically for young lawyers is the first of the quarterly program developing your knowledge and practical skills. The program covers the full spectrum of substantive law from: Administration and Probate of Deceased Estates and Ethics in Litigation; to Basics in Debt Recovery and Enforcement Orders; and Family Law Property Matters.
You can register for one seminar or the whole program which is held every Tuesday at the LIV between 5.30 and 7pm. The program commences on Tuesday, 5 April.

Golden Gavel Competition
Thursday 12 May
Enter now to compete on behalf of your firm
The competition provides a fantastic opportunity for trainees and young lawyers with less than six years’ post-admission experience to exercise and improve their public speaking skills. Competitors have the opportunity to display their verbal skills, quick wit and humour in front of their colleagues, peers and an eminent panel of adjudicators. Most importantly, the winner of the Victorian competition will go on to represent their firm and Victoria in the 2011 national competition in Melbourne on 16 September.
LIV & Hanover Welfare Services Mooting Competition

Young lawyers and invited to participate in the 2011 Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) & Hanover Welfare Services Mooting Competition. The Competition has been held for over ten years and provides an invaluable opportunity for the trainees and new lawyers to exercise and improve their advocacy skills. The LIV has been supporting Hanover Welfare Services’ (Hanover) involvement with the mooting competition for over a decade and we are pleased to be bringing this unique opportunity to our members once again.

Short Story Competition
Looking for a way to express your creative side? LIV Young Lawyers has launched the inaugural Short Story Competition. Submissions must be 750-1500 words and have a “legal flavour”. Entries are due by 30 June. Great prizes to be won including publication of the winning entry in the final 2011 edition of the Young Lawyers Journal in December. All other submissions will be published online.

Applications open for VLA’s New Lawyers Program
Applications are now open for first and second-year lawyers to apply to work with Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) through its New Lawyers Program. The program will provide 13 successful applicants with comprehensive training and development over two years, with most then moving into ongoing positions at VLA. New lawyers will work across VLA’s civil justice, criminal law and family law programs.

Victorian Golden Gavel Competition
