Information for Law Students
LIV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Information
Since 2008 the LIV has offered a scholarship for one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander law graduate to undertake the The College of Law Victoria’s professional program.
The program is currently valued at $7,500.00 (as of 29 November 2010) and is an accredited course of practical legal training for admission as an Australian lawyer in Victoria.
Selection Criteria
You must:
- Be of Aboriginal/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
- Have completed your LLB at a recognised Australian university;
- Demonstrate financial, social or family hardship, e.g. what challenges have you had to overcome to achieve your degree; and
- Demonstrate personal contributions to your community, e.g. voluntary legal work, reconciliation activities or equivalent,(e.g. parenting or carer roles) will be highly regarded.
Application Process
Applications are now open (pdf) and close on Friday, 25 February 2011 at 5pm sharp (regrettably no late applications will be accepted).
Please include the following:
- A one page statement addressing the selection criteria;
- A current resume;
- A certified copy of your academic transcript; and
- A certified letter from your local co-operative or recognised Elders confirming your identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
Applications will be reviewed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Law Institute of Victoria. Applicants who are successful in securing an interview will be contacted within a fortnight of the close of application date.
Applicants will be asked to attend a short interview to provide applicants with the change to expand on their application, particularly in relation to their contributions to the community.
Unless otherwise advised the interview panel will consist of:
- LIV Chief Executive Officer;
- LIV President or Council member; and
- President of Tarwirri (Indigenous Law Students and Lawyers Association of Victoria)
General Information
The successful applicant may enrol in the College of Law course any time up to 12 months of the student receiving the notification.
