Certificate of Fitness

In Victoria, the Law Institute of Victoria prepares Certificates of Fitness, while the Supreme Court of Victoria prepares Certificates of Good Standing. The Supreme Court of Victoria requires a Certificate of Fitness from the LIV before it will prepare a Certificate of Good Standing. Applications for both certificates can be lodged at the same time. For information about Certificates of Good Standing, please contact:

Admissions Clerk, Board of Examiners

Phone: 03 9603 9306 Website: www.supremecourt.vic.gov.au

If you have been admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria, or if you have held a practising certificate in Victoria, the Law Institute is able to prepare a Certificate of Fitness that states:

  • The date that you were admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Victoria
  • The periods for which you have held a practising certificate in Victoria
  • Any conditions or restrictions on practising certificates that you have held in Victoria
  • Whether or not you currently hold a practising certificate

The certificate is accompanied by a covering letter signed by the General Manager of Professional Standards that states:

  • whether or not you have ever held a practising certificate suspended or cancelled in Victoria
  • whether or not an order has ever been made to suspend you from practice in Victoria
  • whether or not you are subject to legal proceedings in Victoria

Please allow 7–10 business days for the Legal Services Commissioner to provide us with your history letter. We will then issue your certificate within 1-3 business days from receipt of this letter.

Certificates of Fitness are only valid for 28 days from date of issue.

To request a Certificate of Fitness:

  1. Download a Request for Certificate of Fitness application and consent form (word).
  2. Complete all details on both forms and return to the LIV Practitioner Information Centre, together with payment
