Regulation

Steps to Qualified Practice

Admission to Legal Practice

Practising certificate applicants, who are admitted to legal practice in an Australian jurisdiction other than Victoria, must attach evidence of their interstate admission to their practising certificate application.

The Council of Legal Education and Board of Examiners determines whether applicants qualify for admission to the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Candidates for admission to the Supreme Court of Victoria must demonstrate to the Board of Examiners that they have met the requisite educational and practical experience requirements. These requirements are set by regulation and the Council of Legal Education.

New Zealand lawyers

Practitioners admitted in New Zealand can apply for admission to the Supreme Court of Victoria under Mutual Recognition legislation.

Overseas lawyers

Practitioners admitted in a foreign jurisdiction should contact the Council of Legal Education and Board of Examiners for an assessment of any additional criteria they will need to meet in order to be admitted in Victoria.
