    This session will explore the more challenging parts of assessing past and future economic loss claims by covering the following topics with reference to real-life case studies:

    • future earnings assumptions
    • the valuation of superannuation and other employment benefits
    • residual capacity
    • retirement ages
    • economic loss under Common Law vs Statutory benefits and the interaction with social security
    • assumed repayment of statutory benefits; Fox v Wood

    You will have the opportunity to submit ‘questions on notice’ prior to the session as well as participate in an extended Q&A session with our speaker to ensure that any questions you may have on this topic are addressed on the day.

    Presenter: Mr David Heath, Consulting Actuary and Director at Cumpston Sarjeant
    David Heath is a consulting actuary and Director at Cumpston Sarjeant. He has more than 25 years’ experience in general insurance and accident compensation, and more than 10 years’ experience acting as an expert witness, specialising in calculations of economic loss. David has been heavily involved in the actuarial education process, is a lecturer in actuarial studies and an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He also serves as a director on a number of boards. Despite being both a qualified actuary and accountant, he hopes he is not the most boring man in Australia

    Admitted to practice in 1995, Craig Lynch is a Practice Group Leader at Slater and Gordon.Craig has been very actively involved with the Accredited Specialisation Program at the LIV since becoming a Personal Injury Law Specialist in 2001. He was a member of the Personal Injury Law Advisory Committee between 2003 and 2011, and has been a member of the Specialisation Board since 2007, including three years as Chair (2012-2014). Craig was awarded the LIV’s Accredited Specialist Achievement Award in 2011 and is currently the Attorney General’s nominee on the VCAT Rules Committee.
