  • Emerging Leaders Conference - Wednesday 14 Mar
    • 9:00 AM Session 1: Keynote Address: Building Your Career

Speaker: Heidi Asten, Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills and Accredited Specialist in Environmental and Planning Law

In her keynote address Heidi Asten will share how she built the career she always wanted and provide practical advice on the steps you can take to progress your own. This session will focus on the importance of practice management processes for new and emerging solicitors and the key issues you need to be aware of. Attendees will be able to ask questions at the end of this session and are encouraged to come prepared.

    • 10:00 AM Morning Tea
    • 10:30 AM Session 2: The Young Lawyer’s Practice Management Toolkit

Managing a practice is not just the responsibility of partners or senior associates. To ensure personal and professional success, all practitioners should know how to manage their workload and individual files. In this session, we will look at the top practice management issues emerging leaders need to be across, followed by discussion groups on some of these key areas. Topics will include risk management, financial management and more.

Speaker: Robert Symons, General Counsel, Norton Rose Fulbright

    • 11:30 AM Session 3: The Partner Panel: Building Your Own Client Base

Building your client base is important in all stages of your legal career and should begin from the moment you walk through your firm’s door. In this panel discussion, our highly successful partner panellists will speak about how they have grown their own client base, the mistakes they have made along the way and what young lawyers can do to develop their own stream of work. Our panel will also discuss the importance of marketing yourself and personal branding.

      Panellists:

      • Steve Bell, Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills
      • Sam Pandya, Managing Partner, Opus Red Lawyers
      • Third panellist – To be confirmed

Moderator: Roger Ouk, Principal, Ouk Legal Group

    • 12:30 PM Networking Lunch
    • 1:30 PM Session 4: The Agile Lawyer: Managing Matters and Increasing Efficiencies

Time management (and lack thereof) is one of the most common complaints in the legal profession. Fortunately there are strategies you can implement to ensure your time is used efficiently, increase your productivity and get the most out of each working day. This session will focus on using the Agile Method to help you streamline your workload, manage matters and take the lead on projects within your organisation.

    • 2:30 PM Session 5: Leadership Discussion Groups

Developing leadership skills is essential for all lawyers. In this session we will cover the skills required to be a good leader, including tips on how to influence and navigate difficult personalities. Delegates will have the opportunity to break into small groups and discuss key issues, learn from professional peers and receive expert guidance and advice from our facilitator.
