  • Practice Management Conference Stream 1 - Thursday 22 Jun

    • 9:00 AM Joint Session – Let’s Talk Start-Ups

      This inaugural Practice Management Conference will commence with an interactive discussion between an interviewer and our keynote speaker. The questions will cover what people need to know when launching their start-up company or firm, the key challenges they can expect to face and how they can overcome them.

    • 9:30 AM Joint Session – Global Trends in Legal Practice Management

      This session will look at new and emerging issues in the area of practice management, including a look at the findings of the Deloitte study published in June 2016, “Future Trends for Legal Services – Global Research Study”.

    • 10:30 AM Stream 2 – Upping the Ante: Business Strategy and Financial Management for Growing Firms

      Already have a firm established and looking to grow? The first part of this session will feature a presentation on how to build a solid business strategy, with the second presentation discussing the key tips for good financial management.

    • 11:30 AM Joint Session – Best Practice Round Tables

      In this session, you will have the opportunity to sit at two of our four round tables to discuss best practice in the following key areas:

      What does it really mean to be a successful leader? This engaging session will be facilitated by a highly experienced executive coach who will take you through the key differences between management and leadership, and how to define your role as a leader.

      By joining with other lawyers in small groups, you will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive discussion, learn from your peers and receive expert guidance, advice and comments from our facilitator.

      Topics will include:

      • the skills required to be an effective leader
      • the importance of determining your purpose as a leader
      • ways you can inspire and empower your team.

    • 2:30 PM Stream 2 – What’s New in Legal Technologies and Innovation?

      No matter how successful the practice, there are always opportunities for growth. In this session, our panellists will discuss the latest software, technologies and innovative practices that could help your established firm continue to grow and thrive. You will also learn practical strategies that will help you implement these systems and processes into your own practice.

    • 3:30 PM Afternoon Tea
    • 4:00 PM Joint Session – The End Game: when, why and how to get out

      Whether it’s time for a change or time to retire, you will eventually need to have an exit plan in place for your practice. This final session will give you an overview of why it’s important to think about succession planning even if you’re just starting out, as well as the processes and procedures you can put into place to ensure your firm is ready for your exit when you are. This will be a half-hour seminar followed by a half-hour panel discussion to give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    This inaugural Practice Management Conference presents an exciting opportunity for lawyers in all stages of their own practice journey to learn the key techniques and information they need to succeed. Several sessions in our innovative program are split into two streams to ensure you are getting the education and advice most relevant to your current phase of practice management.

    If you are already established in your own practice and looking for ways to grow, the sessions in Stream 2 featured on this page are designed for you. If you are just starting out in your own practice, or looking into the option, consider registering for Stream 1 on this page. More information can be found below.

    Conference Streams

    Please note that the 10.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm sessions of this conference are broken into two streams, while the other sessions are combined for all attendees. Registering on this page will allow you to attend the break-out sessions for Stream 2, "Upping the Ante: Business Strategy and Financial Management for Growing Firms", “Leadership Discussion Groups” and “What’s New in Legal Technologies and Innovation?”.     Liz Harris, Principal, Ovid Consulting

    David Whiting, Principal, Whiting Lawyers Pty Ltd

    Marco Zanon, Acting Manager Investigations, Law Institute of Victoria

    Marco holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and is a Member of CPA Australia. He has been an LIV trust account investigator since 2014 and is experienced in providing education and practical support to law practices to assist with their compliance obligations. Prior to joining the LIV, Marco worked in an accounting practice providing external audit, taxation and business services. Additionally, he has more than 20 years’ experience in ASX listed companies in internal audit and finance manager roles.

    Michael Dolan, Senior Ethics Solicitor, Law Institute of Victoria

    Michael has gained extensive experience as a country and city solicitor, as well as in-house counsel for both a major statutory corporation in Victoria and an Australian electricity supply industry association. Michael provides advice to solicitors on ethics issues and supports the work of the LIV Ethics Committee.

    Christine Lazzarotto, Principal – Compliance, Law Institute of Victoria
