2020 brought into sharp focus the importance of a strong, resilient and agile public sector and called for innovation and flexibility. As governments tackle the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, public sector leaders face new challenges as they focus on building the sector’s capabilities to respond effectively to short- and long-term issues and opportunities. In this keynote session, Victoria’s recently appointed Attorney General will provide insights into the public sector’s response to shaping Victoria’s "new normal" and what that means for legal practitioners working in government.

Keynote speaker: The Honourable Jaclyn Symes, Victorian Attorney-General

Born and bred in regional Victoria, Jaclyn grew up in Benalla before completing a Bachelor of Laws at Deakin University. She became an Industrial Officer at the Australian Services Union to further her legal training, before moving into government as an adviser to Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls. In 2010, she was appointed as Senior Legal and Justice Adviser to then-Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews.

In 2014, Jaclyn was elected Member for Northern Victoria, and became the Upper House Government Whip as well as sitting on the Legal and Social Issues Committee, Independent Broad Based Anti-Corruption Committee, Accountability and Oversight Committee and the Legislative Council Privileges Committee.

She was proud to have been appointed to Daniel Andrews’ 50% female Cabinet following the 2018 election and was appointed Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council in March 2020.

Jaclyn was incredibly humbled and honoured to be appointed as Victoria’s Attorney-General in December 2020, where she will focus on delivering the important reform agenda and continue working towards a just and equitable justice system for all Victorians. She remains the Minister for Resources.
