The process for departing from the administrative assessment of child support can be confusing and difficult – even for those practitioners who are considered experts in family law.

    Ms Catherine Devine, leading barrister in this complex area, has both the knowledge and expertise to guide you through this specialised area. She will provide you with an overview of the options available to your client and guide you through a complex fictitious scenario to provide you with the tools to manage these applications more confidently in your practice.

    Cath will share with you the benefit of her experience in dealing with the internal review process within the Department of Human Services and in the case that an application may be issued in Court.

    This session will equip you with the necessary tools to manage complex child support departure applications in your practice, in addition to hearing Cath answer questions from other family law accredited specialists in attendance on the day.

    The Honourable Chief Judge Alstergren of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia

    The Honourable Deputy Chief Justice William Alstergren was appointed as Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia on 13 October 2017. His Honour holds a dual commission as a justice of the Family Court of Australia and was appointed as the Deputy Chief Justice on 15 December 2017 and appointed as the administrative head of the Appeal Division on 8 March 2018.

    After graduating from Melbourne University in Law (and a LLM), Chief Judge Alstergren undertook articles in family law with Kenna Croxford & Co. From 1991 he practiced as a barrister in Melbourne and took silk in 2012. His Honour was regularly briefed in large and complex commercial, family, industrial and tax trials and appeals in the Federal Court and state superior courts.

    He was a member of the Bar Ethics Committee, the founder of the Bar’s Pro Bono Duty Barristers Committee and received the Distinguished Pro Bono Service award by the Victorian Chief Justice in 2008. His Honour is a former Chairman of the Victorian Bar.

    Immediately prior to joining the courts, His Honour was the president of the Australian Bar Association.
