The Honourable Justice Hargrave, Principal Judge of the Commercial Court, Supreme Court of Victoria

Justice Hargrave graduated with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Melbourne in 1978, and served articles at the firm now known as Corrs Chambers Westgarth. His Honour joined the Victorian Bar in 1980 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995. While at the Bar, his Honour had a general commercial and corporations practice. His Honour was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria in April 2005. His Honour has served as the Principal Judge of the Commercial Court and its predecessor the Commercial and Equity Division since 2013.

    Andrew Downie, Barrister, Victorian Bar

Andrew has a predominantly commercial practice and regularly appears in trials and interlocutory hearings across all jurisdictions. His trial work frequently involves complex expert issues (both financial and scientific) and extensive documentary evidence. Andrew regularly appears in technology, engineering and construction (TEC) matters and matters involving issues of property law, contract, equity, trusts and insolvency. Prior to being admitted as a solicitor, he worked in the chemical sciences field and has been published in various scientific journals.

John Colonna, Costs Lawyer, LIV Costs Lawyers

John is the manager of LIV Costs Lawyers and has practised exclusively as a costs lawyer since his admission to practice. He has experience in assessing files and drawing bills of costs for firms as an external costs consultant, in addition to acting as an in-house costs advisor and assessor, and an advocate before the Costs Court both in mediations and at taxation of contested bills of costs. Being regularly exposed to rulings made on items in bills, John is well placed to advise solicitors how to maximise their costs recovery, or minimise their clients’ liability to pay opposing party’s costs.Learning Outcomes
