Trying to locate historical legal records or documents held by a legal firm that has now closed?
The LIV can help locate historical records or documents through the LIV Legal Archives service. This service is available to LIV members, legal professionals and the community to assist you in locating a range of files and information from former legal practices and solicitors. We aim to respond within seven (7) working days*.
*DISCLAIMER
The LIV Library department responds to queries about contact details for solicitors and law firms, and queries about the location of deeds and wills where firms have closed. We aim to respond to all requests within 7 working days.
Requests must be lodged on the appropriate online or hardcopy form. Please complete a separate form for each specific item (i.e. firm/name, deed or will) to be researched. Please note payment is required in advance for both types of services.
Information sources utilised in processing archive research requests come primarily from; legal directories; information supplied by practitioners when notifying of practice changes or closures and information held the Law Institute of Victoria.
Research is limited to those resources held by, or available to the LIV. Our researchers will cover every available resource which pertains to your specific request. Please note this is payable in advance and is non-refundable.
