LIV Council

Annual Council Conference

Members of the Law Institute Council and heads of the Law Institute’s Sections and country and suburban law associations met on 21-22 February for the annual Council Conference.

A report on the speeches given at the conference can be found on pages 26 and 27 of this edition of the LIJ.

A suburban and country consultation was also held, during which presidents of the various law associations outlined to Council the issues in their areas.

Among the major issues raised was the impact of legal aid centres on firms, which Simone Tate of the Eastern Suburbs Law Association said was “cutting core business to the bone”.

Some presidents brought up the issue of the impact of conveyancing companies on their association’s members’ businesses, which had led to conveyancing being an unprofitable aspect for many firms and sole practitioners.

There was also concern expressed about the ageing profile of practitioners in their area. Andrew Wilson, of the Northern Suburbs Law Association, said the ageing lawyer population in his area meant each month he was hearing of practices closing down or consolidating with larger firms.

Some presidents wanted to see the Supreme Court go out on more country non-murder circuits.

There was positive feedback on the Law Institute’s continuing professional development tour of regional Victoria. There were also many presidents who reported an increase in the level of interest and activity of young lawyers at their associations.
