LIJ features at media awards

Cite as: (2004) 78(4) LIJ, p.29

The LIJ was recognised at Victoria’s leading media awards for its high standard of work.

The LIJ received three high commendations at Victoria’s most prestigious media awards, the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Awards, held on 12 March.

In a significant achievement by a niche publication, the LIJ was highly commended in three of the four categories it entered for work completed in 2003.

LIJ art director Katherine Alexander was highly commended in the category of “Best page layout” for her work on the article Wanted – Water: Rights of access to water (March 2003, pages 42-46).

The judges of this award said Ms Alexander’s work featured “a clever and imaginative use of colour and text to focus attention on an emotive subject”.

LIJ journalist Jason Silverii was recognised in the category of “Best three headlines in any medium”.

The three headlines were:

  • Court goes Microsoft on techno-giant (October 2003, page 83);
  • Having the bottle to outsource (October 2003, page 98); and
  • Boob tube (November 2003, page 88).

Freelance illustrator Pat Campbell was highly commended in the category of “Best illustration in any medium”.

His illustration for the article titled High aims for professional standards legislation appeared on the cover of the November 2003 edition.

The judges of this category said Mr Campbell displayed “superb craftsmanship”.

Speaking after the event, LIJ managing editor Mick Paskos said it was a good result for the Law Institute and the legal profession.

“The Quills are traditionally the exclusive domain of the major mainstream media players such as the Herald and Weekly Times, Fairfax and the ABC, with their significant resources and large staff numbers.

“Bearing in mind that no more than two highly commendeds are named in each category, the LIJ’s efforts are noteworthy.

“It is a credit to the Institute and particularly the publications team.”
