LIV president Tony Burke has told a dinner seminar that he received invaluable mentoring after he joined the LIV Business Law Committee about eight years ago.

“My colleagues on the committee were very welcoming and encouraging. On reflection, I realise that they mentored me,” Mr Burke told the Eastern Suburbs Law Association seminar at Box Hill Receptions on 12 February.

He urged lawyers to take advantage of opportunities for networking and mentoring offered from within the LIV.

“I’ve learned a lot and met some wonderful people. My only frustration is that I didn’t discover much earlier what was on offer,” he said.

In other speeches, Alfred Hospital associate professor Steven Ellen discussed recognising depression.

He said among the common signs of depression were out-of-character moodiness, increased irritability and frustration, difficulty taking minor personal criticisms, spending less time with friends and family, loss of interest in food, sex, exercise or other pleasurable activities, insomnia, increased alcohol and drug use, avoiding work or school, increased health complaints like fatigue or pain, taking reckless or unnecessary risks such as driving dangerously and slowing down of thoughts and actions.

Dr Enrico Cementon, of the Western Hospital, addressed the issue of alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace.
