The LIV Council meets each month to debate and decide issues of importance to members, the legal profession and the community. At the 20 February meeting, Council discussed recovery of pro bono costs in litigation in Victorian courts and tribunals, approved the appointment of Suzanne Kee to fill a casual vacancy on Council until 31 December 2014 and noted receipt of the status report on the scoping study for a Legal Community Health and Wellbeing Program.

Council resolved to consider the options and proposals involving structure and governance set out in the status report on the Legal Community Health and Wellbeing Program scoping study. An ongoing program, Council heard, would help lawyers improve the quality of their working lives. Statistics on the prevalence of depression and anxiety in the legal profession show that health and wellness is a major issue for the profession.

Council approved the recommendation to endorse and provide a letter of support to the Victorian Bar regarding its proposal to develop a submission to amend the Supreme Court Rules to award costs in pro bono cases, subject to the inclusion of a pro bono certificate and suggested amendments.
