Awards recognise work with indigenous community

Cite as: (2003) 77(8) LIJ, p.18

Court of Appeal Justice Geoffrey Eames was one of 14 recipients of the state government’s Indigenous Community Justice Awards for 2003.

Justice Eames and the state government’s public correctional organisation (CORE) Koori Unit manager Carmel Barry were winners of the award marking the achievements of individuals working in the Victorian public sector.

Although this was the third year the justice awards have been held, it was the first time the public sector award was presented.

Justice Eames received his award for his longstanding involvement in indigenous just ice issues, beginning in the 1970s with the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Centre, which led to him representing indigenous organisations at the royal commission into the British testing of nuclear weapons at Maralinga.

Justice Eames told the LIJ that while he was honoured to receive the award, his role was minor when compared to many others who worked with the indigenous community.

Ms Barry received her award for more than 20 years’ work supporting Aboriginal prisoners in the Victorian justice system, which included her role as manager of CORE’s Koori Unit.

After retiring from the position, Ms Barry became a volunteer for the Aboriginal Official Prison Visitors Program.

Awards were presented to six Koori and six non-Koori recipients from each of Victoria’s six Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee zones.

The winners were:

  • Barwon South West region: Trevor Edwards and senior sergeant John Kiely;
  • Gippsland region: Laurie Marks and Trevor Felming ham;
  • Grampians region: Antoinette Braybrook and constable David Flannery;
  • Hume region: Joanne Atkin son and sergeant Gordon Porter;
  • Loddon Mallee region: Myra Grinter and inspector Trevor Carter; and
  • Metropolitan region: Patrick Farrant and superintendent Rod Norman.
