Approaching the end of my degree, I realised I was entering into a competitive and daunting profession and needed help with the transition period. As I filtered through the many viable and impressive mentors offered by the LIV mentoring program, I came across Tara’s profile which stood out, as her interests, practice and career pathway were similar to what I wanted mine to be.

After “cold emailing” Tara, I wasn’t expecting a response soon. Much to my surprise, Tara replied to my email within two hours and had already suggested a meeting date and place.

From then, during every casual lunch, Tara has been able to assure, comfort and provide valuable advice to every question and concern I had. Tara’s honest and candid guidance has enabled me to gain confidence in myself and I am genuinely excited about what’s ahead.

I look forward to an ongoing mentoring relationship where I still have much to gain from Tara’s extensive knowledge and experience.

Nhu Thuy and I met through the LIV mentoring program. Throughout my career I have and continue to be inspired and strengthened by many mentors in the profession. I am always energised by the opportunity to pay it forward.

I signed up as a mentor in the LIV mentoring program because it is so equitable. The program enables LIV members to contact and build a relationship with any listed mentor. It represents a fantastic opportunity for anyone seeking guidance and inspiration.

I work with a number of mentees. While there are common themes, each mentee needs something unique and those needs change over time too.

The opportunities are lined up for Nhu Thuy. She simply needed a cheerleader to help her recognise those opportunities and develop her confidence to grab them with both hands. It is a wonderful experience to witness her growth and it is such a pleasure to see her stepping into herself and her career.

Tara Stark is a lawyer at Slater and Gordon, member of the LIV Young Lawyers executive, co-chair of the LIV Young Lawyers professional development committee and a director on the board of the Satellite Foundation.
