LIV Council

The Law Institute of Victoria Council meeting on 19 October welcomed representatives from country and suburban law associations.

Attendees included Mornington Peninsula Solicitors Association secretary Adam Birch, Geelong and Western District Law Association vice-president Alicia Carroll, North West Law Association president George Conlan, Goulburn Valley Law Association president Anthony Coote, North East Law Association president Karen Keegan, Northern Suburbs Law Association president Jennifer Mairs, Western Suburbs Law Association president Peter Mecoles, Southern Solicitors Group president Celina Roth and Gabrielle Turnball, who was a guest of Councillor David Faram.

Vice-president

Treasurer Tony Burke was elected as the 2007 Council vice-president.

Legal Education Review

LIV Professional Development general manager Murray Paterson informed Council of the expected changes to continuing professional development (CPD) following a review of pre and post-admission legal training by Department of Justice Legal Education Review consultant Professor Susan Campbell. The Campbell report was released in September.

Careers in Law

Marketing projects manager Penny Fairbank updated Council on the Careers in Law website, http://www.careers.liv.asn.au, which has been receiving 16,500 viewers per month.

Criminal Law Section AGM and End of Year Networking Evening

This evening is an ideal opportunity for LIV members working in criminal law to network with legal practitioners with similar experiences and interests in a relaxed atmosphere. CPD units

All of the programs outlined below are designed to meet the CPD Rules requirements. The CPD Rules state the following in relation to claiming CPD units for attendance at professional development programs: “If this particular educational activity is relevant to your immediate or long-term needs in relation to your professional development and practice of law, then you should claim one unit for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included”.

CPD Intensive Week – March 2007

A reminder that CPD Intensive Week will be held from 20-23 March 2007.

Registering for CPD Intensive Week will be the last chance for practitioners
