The 2011 LIV Legal Awards – which celebrated the outstanding achievements of some extraordinary lawyers – were at the time of writing to be unveiled at a special gala event at Federation Square on 18 November.

The winners were some of Victoria’s most decorated practitioners and brightest prospects who made outstanding contributions to the general community, demonstrated professional excellence or promoted and advanced the profession.

This year, for the first time, full details of award recipients have been published as a special insert in this issue of the LIJ.

The annual awards include certificates of service, the Rogers Legal Writing Award and recognition of 50 years as an LIV member.

Award categories cover access to justice, accredited specialists, community lawyers, general, government lawyers, legal ethics, mentors, new lawyers, pro bono, regional lawyers, green initiative of the year and managing partners.

This year’s honorary life membership award was to be presented to former LIV president and Law Council of Australia president John Corcoran. The Paul Baker Prize was to be awarded to Australia’s full-time Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke.
