LIV Council

The LIV Council meets each month to debate and decide issues of importance to members, the overall legal profession and the community.

As part of Council’s policy to visit regional and suburban law associations on a regular basis, the meeting was held in the Southern Solicitors Group district at the Bentleigh Club, Bentleigh on 18 October.

At the meeting the LIV executive office bearers were confirmed for the 2013 calendar year and Reynah Tang indicated his intention to take up his term of office as president from1 January 2013. Geoff Bowyer was also confirmed as president-elect and Katie Miller as vice-president.

Also at the meeting Council agreed to appoint Michael Jorgensen and Michael O’Halloran as the LIV’s endorsed trustees of the Law Aid Scheme which was established in 1996 as a joint initiative of the LIV, Victorian Bar and the state government to fund disbursements for impecunious civil litigants.

Mr Jorgensen was admitted to practice in 1981 and has been a principal of law firm Williams Winter since 1985. He has a bachelor of laws and a bachelor of arts from Monash University. Williams Winter is a broad-based administrative law and common law practice that includes employment-related litigation, discrimination law and personal injury litigation. Mr Jorgensen has extensive experience in litigating in all state and federal jurisdictions.

Mr O’Halloran was appointed as an Ombudsman at the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) in July 2010. Prior to that, he was a full-time Member at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). During his four years at VCAT, he sat in the Civil, Occupation and Business Regulation and Guardianship lists. Before working at VCAT, he was a specialist insurance litigation partner in a large Melbourne legal firm for 21 years. Mr O’Halloran has a masters of law from the University of Melbourne and he is the former legal member of the Chiropractors Registration Board and former treasurer of Headway Victoria.
