New practical legal training

The College of Law has launched a new Practical Legal Training program called CANVAS.

Instead of an academic structure, it takes a problem-solving approach, reflecting the types of tasks graduates will face in practice.

College of Law CEO and principal Neville Carter said the college recognised that the needs of new lawyers have evolved and that a more flexible, practical approach to training was needed.

“Our PLT program is not just about equipping law graduates to gain admission to practice. Of course it achieves that end but it is really about ensuring that new lawyers start their careers on the best possible footing. Having confidence in those early years of practice is crucial.”

The courses were being introduced from November 2015 subject to approval from the regulatory bodies in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. Approval has been received in NSW and Victoria.
