Bar helps build relationships

It was bar work of a different kind in Ballarat on 1 June as young lawyers gathered socially at the Haida Bar and then on to the Phoenix Brewery to meet the city’s newest magistrate, Luisa Bazzani.

The event, organised by the Law Institute of Victoria’s (LIV) Young Lawyers’ Section, attracted many of Ballarat’s articled clerks and young lawyers who have not yet appeared before Ms Bazzani.

Young Lawyers representative Sarah Edwards, from BJT Legal in Ballarat, said the event was a great success and was the first of many such nights planned to develop a sense of fraternity within the profession’s newcomers.

It was also a good opportunity for more experienced members of the judiciary to impart a few tips to the younger members away from the “formal Bar”.

The next event for Ballarat’s young lawyers may push the intellectual boundaries a little more ... it’s a trivia night on 17 August to raise money for local cancer treatment services.
