Spike in practice support calls

Briefs

Cite as: July 2012 86 (07) LIJ, p.12

The LIV’s expanded practice support phone line has experienced a major spike in calls in the 10 months since its July 2011 launch.

Figures show the new service took 1700 calls in that period, a 61 per cent increase compared with the old property inquiry phone service. Callers had queries relating to the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), leasing, property and business contracts, incorporated legal practices (ILPs), Section 32 and wills and estates.

The LIV’s legal policy and practice general manager Joy Acquaro said the practice support phone line offered practitioners a sounding board for their legal issues and was part of a broader practice support service provided by the LIV.

“We are not providing legal advice through the phone service but guidance on issues,” she said. “Practitioners often don’t have someone they can talk to about these issues who is experienced and independent.”

She said callers had come from regional and suburban practices as well as larger firms. The LIV has recently introduced a succession planning service and the Vic Lawyers’ Health Line to further meet the needs of members. The practice support line offers guidance on issues including:

  • practice area issues in family law, commercial law, property law and succession law;
  • buying, setting up, merging or selling a practice;
  • choosing the best practice structure;
  • trust accounting; and
  • LIV forms and precedents.

Calls can be made to 9607 9378 between 9am-1pm, Monday to Friday. For more information on the succession planning service and health line see www.liv.asn.au and www.viclawyershealth.com.au.
