1967

Ronald Ryan hanged – Victoria’s last judicial execution.

1970

Just before midday on 15 October 1970, a 120 metre span of the half built West Gate Bridge collapsed into the Yarra, killing 35 workers.

A royal commission to investigate the cause of the collapse attributed the failure to a litany of errors in the structural design and building of the bridge. Its findings paved the way for the strengthening of occupational health and safety laws in Australian workplaces.

1976

Family Court Act established by the passing of Family Law Act 1975, it commenced operation on 5 January 1976.
