Legislation to reform, modernise and unify civil procedure in Victoria commenced on 1 January this year.

The Civil Procedure Act 2010 (Vic) aims to change the culture of litigation to promote more non-adversarial dispute resolution through: earlier disclosure of information; greater use of appropriate dispute resolution; and improved case management powers for the courts. The new Act brings significant changes for people working in the justice system, particularly in the civil jurisdiction. The following articles, by authors including Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Warren and County Court Judge Graham Anderson, are designed to help practitioners become more familiar with key aspects of the Act. The LIJ thanks the Department of Justice for coordinating these articles.
