Experienced family law practitioner Geoff Bonsall has been elected chair of the Law Institute’s Family Law Section for the next 12 months.

A partner at Maeve O’Brien & Geoffrey Bonsall in North Balwyn, Mr Bonsall began in the position on 30 August. He replaced Rose Lockie, who was chair for the past two years.

Mr Bonsall has been a practitioner for the past 27 years, all of which has been in family law.

He was a partner at Plotkins from 1984 to 1995 and a consult-ant at Abbott Stillman & Wilson from 1997 to 2003.

He has been a member of the Family Law Section Executive for about 15 years and was the Section’s Property and Mainten-ance Committee chair for five years until 2003.

Mr Bonsall’s election was held three days after this year’s Family Law Conference, which took place on 27 August at the Crown Promenade Hotel. Among the conference guests was newly appointed Family Court Chief Justice Diana Bryant.

About 200 people attended, making it the most well attended Family Law Conference held by the Institute.
