President’s Awards finalists announced

It is time again to recognise solicitors’ contributions to the law and community work with the 2008 LIV President’s Awards.

The shortlist of finalists has been released and the winners will be announced at a special lunch on 7 November at Zinc, Federation Square.

Categories include best mentor; new, community, regional and government lawyers; legal ethics; pro bono; and accredited specialists.

Nominations closed on 18 July and were made by current Victorian legal practitioners

or law firms.

The awards are designed to recognise solicitors’ contributions to the general community, professional excellence in legal practice and the promotion and advancement of the legal profession.

LIV president Tony Burke said the quality of shortlisted finalists highlighted the talent, expertise and commitment contained within the more than 14,500 LIV members.

“The profession is only as strong as its leadership and the hallmark of an effective profession is its ability to cultivate and acknowledge its leaders,” Mr Burke said.

“So it’s important that at the LIV we annually recognise practitioners in a variety of areas who have consistently given of themselves for their fellow members.”

The awards were open to all sections of the profession, from sole practitioners, lawyers from firms of any size, inhouse counsel and pro bono to legal aid lawyers.

Along with law firms, this year’s finalists are drawn from academia and community legal and resource centres.
