To represent the interests of members and the wider community, the LIV actively seeks to influence policy and legislation through lobbying and submissions to government, the courts and other bodies.
American Bar Association

LIV president Michael Holcroft attended the 2012 American Bar Association conference in Chicago. Mr Holcroft and LIV president-elect Reynah Tang met with executives from government, Illinois legal aid and the legal profession.

Asylum seeker fundraiser

Mr Holcroft and LIV CEO Michael Brett Young attended the LIV refugee film fundraiser. Following the screening of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, a documentary about refugees made by barrister Jessie Taylor, the LIV hosted a panel discussion on the future for refugees in Australia.

Ballarat Law Association

Mr Holcroft and Mr Brett Young attended the winter dinner for the LIV’s Young Lawyers and members of the Ballarat and District Law Association.

Country and suburban conference

Mr Holcroft and Mr Brett Young attended the annual Country and Suburban Law Association Conference at the LIV.

IBAC meeting

Mr Brett Young met with Ron Bonighton, the acting commissioner of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC). They discussed the timetable for the introduction of IBAC.

Lawyers Congress

Mr Brett Young met with Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau business development executive Imogene Thomson. They discussed the possibility of Melbourne hosting the Congress of the International Association of Lawyers in 2018.

Legal year 2013

Mr Brett Young attended a meeting of the International Commission of Jurists (Victoria). Under discussion was how the LIV could assist with the coordination of the Opening of the Legal Year event for 2013.

Mori meeting

Mr Brett Young met with former US military lawyer Dan Mori. Mr Mori represented David Hicks who was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for six years before pleading guilty to supporting terrorism. Mr Mori is now working at Melbourne’s Shine Lawyers in its new social justice department.

New law library

Mr Holcroft and Mr Brett Young attended the launch of the new Law Library of Victoria project. A memorandum of understanding between the Supreme Court, the County Court, the Magistrates’ Court, VCAT, the Department of Justice, the Victorian Bar and the LIV was signed by Mr Holcroft.

Regional business

Mr Holcroft attended the Regional Business Leaders Forum in Mildura. The event was attended by Deputy Premier Peter Ryan. Under discussion was regional and professional development.

Donor access

The LIV provided an issues paper to government on the competing legal and human rights issues arising under the recommendations of the Victorian Parliament Law Reform Committee inquiry into Access by Donor-Conceived People to Information about Donors.

Witness at public hearing for privacy inquiry

On 10 August 2012, Katie Miller, LIV Council member and member of the Administrative Law and Human Rights Executive, appeared on behalf of the LIV at the inquiry into the Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Bill 2012. The LIV further provided a submission in response to written questions on notice from the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, following the LIV’s previous submissions on the Exposure Draft of the Australian Privacy Principles and the Exposure Draft of the Australian Privacy Amendment LegislationCredit Reporting.
