Running to make a difference

The sporting event of the legal year – the annual LIV Legal Fun Run & Walk – will be held again next month.

More than 1000 entrants are expected to compete on Monday 12 November, running two laps (8km) or walking one lap around The Tan track before enjoying the post-race festivities and a gourmet barbecue. All LIV members, as well as barristers, court staff, law students and legal recruiters, are welcome to take part.

This year the LIV will also launch the LIV Fun Run Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LIVLegalFunRun) page to provide tips, events information and photo-sharing for participants.

Ultra-marathon runner Samantha Gash (above) also had some advice for people who might never have run before but are thinking of giving the Fun Run, or the sport generally, a go. “Get off the road and go on to the trails. It’s far more interesting, it’s better on your body, and it’s so much more inspiring.” She said once people experienced running in different environments they often fell in love with the sport. “Once you have a love of running, you just always want to do it.”

Entrants will also be able to make a difference by fundraising for their favourite charity via website Everyday Hero (www.everydayhero.com.au). Those who do not plan on competing are welcome to register as spectators and cheer on friends and colleagues and then also join the post-race celebrations.

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest solicitors’ team and fastest barristers’ team and the overall quickest will claim the cherished Hartog Berkeley Shoe Trophy. Individual prizes will also be awarded for male and female runners and walkers in various age categories.

The event is an initiative of the LIV Young Lawyers’ Section. Registrations must be made online at register@liv.asn.au and close at 10pm on Thursday 8 November.
