Name and structural changes for the LIV Advocacy and Practice department were approved by LIV Council at its monthly meeting on 17 July.

Guidelines for cooperation between doctors and lawyers were discussed, and Council approved the LIV budget for 2008/2009.

Council approves LIV department changes

Advocacy and Practice general manager Joy Acquaro outlined various recommendations and observations regarding Advocacy and Practice and upcoming challenges.

These key challenges were identified as:

  • balancing the needs and expectations of the members against limited financial and human resources;
  • harnessing the intellectual capital of committees; and
  • the disconnect between LIV Advocacy and Practice and the Law Council of Australia (LCA) and its constituent bodies.

Ms Acquaro gave a presentation of her review of the role and functions of the department.

Council agreed to the name change of the department from Advocacy and Practice to Legal Policy and Practice (LPP).

Council agreed to support a review of Committees of Sections, a submission process policy and a new process for dealing with conflicts regarding submissions.

Ms Acquaro told Council that the LPP name better described the work undertaken by the department, namely to provide strategic legal policy work (legal policy) and strategic support to members in the practice of law (legal practice).

She said it was also more readily identifiable by LIV staff and those outside the LIV, as, for example, the LCA, constituent bodies and government departments were all familiar with the terminology.

The LPP team was also restructured into “clusters” – commercial/property law, community rights, dispute resolution, costing and LIV constituents.

The clusters were formed primarily to provide staff and members with a better understanding of the LPP and acknowledged that an overlap exists between various Sections/Committees.

Medico-legal guidelines

The existing LIV/Australian Medical Association/Victorian Bar guidelines for doctors and lawyers (the guidelines) have been reviewed and updated by the joint LIV/AMA/Victorian Bar Medico-legal Standing Committee.

Council was informed that federal Health and Ageing Minister Nicola Roxon had been invited to announce the launch of the guidelines at a Medico-legal Conference dinner on 4 September.

Council approved the publication of the revised guidelines.

Budget 2008/2009

Council approved the LIV budget for 2008-2009, which had been tabled at the June Council meeting.
