Six  ways organisational change can be good for your career

Nothing is as inevitable as death, taxes – and organisational change. This may come in the form of a merger, restructure, closure, new technology, new manager or a bold new company strategy and goal. And in the current climate, such change is increasingly common. This can be terrifying if your firm is merging and you don’t know if there is a place for you. Fear of the unknown is understandable. However, I can tell you from my experience that change is more often than not exciting and energising, and can create real career opportunities.

 

 

 

How can organisational change benefit your career?

  1. Change can make you smarter. If your life never changed, you’d never learn anything new. Every time you need to deal with something new, you gain a little more insight and wisdom.
     
  2. It can be a fresh start. Change often means new management. While it can be intimidating to have your future in the hands of someone you don’t know, it can mean that your history of successes and failures, or your personal challenges with a previous manager are suddenly wiped clean and you are no longer taken for granted. It’s time to demonstrate your strengths, and build a good relationship with your new manager.
     
  3. It is a chance to be heard. Consultation is an important part of any change process and well-managed change will include opportunity to put your thoughts and ideas forward. Now is the time to bring up any good ideas for process improvement, or new areas to expand into. This may even lead to new respect for your insights and potential leadership opportunities.
     
  4. You could change your role – for the better. Often organisational change means your day to day responsibilities may change. Whilst this can be a bit daunting, it is a chance to pick up new experience, delve into an area that you hadn’t previously been exposed to or work with new people. All this can be good for your confidence and resume.
     
  5. You may learn valuable new skills. Organisational change can include new technology systems. This provides an opportunity to be supported in gaining new skills and learning new ways of working – valuable and transferrable skills.
     
  6. It is energising! I think that organisational change is exciting and motivating. New skills or roles can remind us what we’re capable of, and if we’ve been ‘stuck in a rut’ having new goals and a vision to work towards can lift spirits and creativity levels.

This is a topic top of mind with us at the LIV, and we are going through significant change.

This week we formally farewell former CEO Michael Brett Young, who over the past eight years has steered the LIV through innumerable challenges and changes with skill, teamwork and good humour. Mike, I thank you for your commitment and support, and we are pleased you are staying with the LIV til the end of the year to assist with special projects.

Whilst I will personally miss Mike’s presence at the LIV, I’m genuinely excited by the plans of our new CEO, Nerida Wallace. Nerida is a specialist in change management and practice development, and we look forward to focusing the LIV on supporting our members during this time of great change in the legal profession.

For individuals and organisations, change can be a challenging prospect. But it’s important to stay positive and be flexible enough to adapt. We may not like what’s confronting us – but hopefully the change will present career opportunities for you to take advantage of.
