  • About the author

Regarded as a symbol of respect and excellence, material branded with the LIV logo showcases your affiliation with the sector’s leading professional organisation.

Extract from the Law Institute Journal (January 1962, page 17):

The arms granted to the Institute are described in the body of Grant and are depicted in colour in the left hand top corner of the parchment.
The lower chevron (a V shaped line or stripe usually indicating rank or length of service), of the shield contains the Southern Cross in white on a blue background incorporating parts of the Arms of the State of Victoria identifying the Institute with that State.

The red upper portion of the shield bears two golden quill (main feathers of a bird), pens on either side of the evenly balanced scales of Justice, also in gold, symbolizing the services of solicitors to their clients on opposing sides.

Above the shield is a helmet of a type commonly granted to an esquire (used when there is no other honorific), or to a corporation of standing and antiquity surmounted by a crest consisting of a hand holding a volume of the Law Reports bound in calf leather and resting on wreathed ribbon which repeats the main colours of the shield.

On a scroll below the shield are the words “Justica et Liberatas’, (Justice & Freedom), ideas appropriate to the Institute.
That idea is carried into the supporting figures on either side of the shield.

On the left stands the figure of Justices blindfolded and holding the sheathed sword of Justice.

On the right stands Liberty wearing the red Phdrygian cap of Liberty, (The Phrygian cap or liberty cap is a soft conical cap with the apex bent over, associated in antiquity with several peoples in Eastern Europe and Anatolia, including Phrygia), and holding in her left hand the charter of liberties.
