Apply for Accredited Specialisation

Eligibility Criteria

Accredited Specialisation is offered biennially in 16 areas of law. To be eligible to apply for the Accreditation program practitioners must:

  • Hold membership with the Law Institute of Victoria 
  • Hold a current practising certificate
  • Have at least five years' experience in practice post admission
  • Have substantial involvement in the area of practice over the past three years

Review the Subject Guidelines

Required Assessments

Varying forms of assessment are employed to reflect the characteristics of legal practice and provide candidates different ways to demonstrate their expertise. Candidates undertake up to three components of assessment, examples are included below:

  • Formal written examination – the application of legal knowledge and procedures
  • Assignments based on mock files
  • Drafting exercises
  • Simulated interviews or practical advocacy exercises
  • Examples of candidates' work.

Advisory committees comprise senior members of the profession, academics and Victorian Bar members, who develop assessment tasks and mark examination papers, maintaining the elements of peer review.

Application Process

Please see the latest Application Form for your chosen area for the application requirements. Please note that Application Forms are released towards the end of each year, so this may not be the most relevant. You can complete an Online Expression of Interest Form if you would like more information.

Completed applications should include:

  • Completed form
  • Three references
  • Your CV
  • Payment.

After Application

Applicants will be contacted in writing to confirm confirmation of candidacy.  Within this correspondence, candidates will receive access to the Accredited Specialisation online portal which will include information and resources along with key details of assessment.

Accredited Specialisation Fees

  • Application Fee: $1100 (including GST)
  • Application for special consideration Fee: $220 (including GST) (deducted from full application fee if successful)
  • Annual Fee: $440 (including GST).  NOTE - for the 2020-21 renewal year the fee has been subsidised and reduced to $99 (including GST) 
  • Mutual recognition application fee: $110 (including GST)
  • Leave of Absence fee: $110 (including GST).  NOTE - for the 2020-21 renewal year this fee has been waived by the LIV
