Legal Archive Service

Locating historical law firms or lawyers

Are you trying to locate a law firm that has now closed or a lawyer that is uncontactable?

The LIV Library can help locate lawyers (solicitors) or law firms through the LIV Legal Archive service. This service is available to LIV members, legal professionals and the community to assist you in locating a law firm or lawyer through searching directories, law lists and other resources available at the LIV Library. We aim to respond to the request within ten (10) working days*.

Step 1:

Before using this service, we suggest you contact the Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner (VLSB+C), who are the Regulatory body for legal practitioners in Victoria. They maintain a register of current practising certificate holders in Victoria.

For more information, visit their website or call 9679 8001.

Step 2:

If the VLSB+C are unable to provide contact details for the lawyer or law firm you are looking for, you can lodge an Archive Request with the LIV Libary.

To lodge a request, complete this online Archive Request form.

Please note, there is a fee for this service. LIV members must login with their member ID and password to access a reduced member fee. See the below FAQ for additional details.

The LIV Library department responds to queries about contact details for solicitors and law firms, and queries about the location of deeds and wills where firms have closed. We aim to respond to all requests within 10 working days. Requests must be lodged on the appropriate online or hardcopy form. Please complete a separate form for each specific item (i.e. firm/name, deed or will) to be researched. Please note payment is required in advance for both types of services. Information sources utilised in processing archive research requests come primarily from; legal directories; information supplied by practitioners when notifying of practice changes or closures and information held the Law Institute of Victoria. Research is limited to those resources held by, or available to the LIV. Our researchers will cover every available resource which pertains to your specific request. Please note this is payable in advance and is non-refundable.
