Legal Research Training

Practical legal research workshops, customised training and research refreshers can be delivered to small groups, law firms or tailored to meet your specific needs. Training sessions are facilitated by Tasia Mitsinikos, the LIV's training and research librarian. Tasia has worked in legal and specialist libraries for 15 years, including the Department of Justice. Her work includes assisting members with research requests. She also conducts the group and individual training sessions on different aspects of legal research including case law and legislation.

Individual & Customised Sessions

Internet Class

While most practitioners have a basic understanding of computers, many struggle to embrace what the internet has to offer because they need assistance with the essentials. In response to feedback from the LIV library’s members, an opportunity for individual tutorials in basic internet techniques is now available from our accredited training librarian.

These classes are for two types of people:

  1. Those who are having trouble using or have never used the internet and are struggling with issues such as getting online, browsing the web, searching for and navigating pages.
  2. Those who have a basic knowledge of the internet but want to know about how they can use the tool more effectively to enhance their professional lives.

If you want to understand how to use the internet for the first time, or are looking to upskill and discover innovative ways to take your business or legal practice to the next level, book a one-on-one appointment with our accredited training librarian and she will help you get the skills you need to excel with internet use.

Research Intensive

The LIV library offers its members tailored training solutions to individuals or small groups to improve their familiarity with online legal resources and legal research skills.

These trainings are ideal for:

  • experienced legal practitioners who would like to brush-up on their research skills after a career break (such as extended leave or maternity/paternity leave)
  • new legal practitioners or graduates who would like to enhance their research skills to improve their employability and add to their on-the-job skill sets
  • support staff who would like to ensure their research skills meet the needs of their teams.

The individual sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each participant by addressing their skills gaps and maximising their strengths.

At the end of the session, each participant will know how to:

  • effectively and efficiently research cases or legislation – this means participants will know how to find accurate and timely answers to legal queries
  • utilise a variety of electronic legal resources to remain in touch with the latest legal updates – this means participants won’t get caught out with outdated information.

Tailored Group Workshops

The LIV library offers its members tailored workshops for small groups to improve their familiarity with online legal resources and research skills. Group bookings of four or more people can be held at the LIV library or on-site at the firm.

These trainings are ideal for:

  • small to large law firms who would like a group of staff to use their own and the LIV’s library resources effectively
  • groups of new legal practitioners and support staff at law firms
  • teams of legal practitioners in law firms or in-house counsel and their support staff.

The workshops are tailored to meet the needs of the team, as well as each participant, by addressing their collective and individual goals, as well as areas for improvement in legal research.

At the end of the workshop, each participant will know how to:

  • search for cases and their subsequent consideration
  • find cases considering a section of an act
  • search for authorised, current and historical legislation
  • search for extrinsic and free materials, including journal articles, explanatory memoranda, second reading speeches and credible web resources
  • effectively and efficiently research cases or legislation in specific topics or areas of law: this means participants will know how to find accurate and timely answers to legal queries
  • utilise a variety of electronic legal resources to remain in touch with the latest legal updates: this means participants won’t get caught out with outdated information.

Price & Time

The length of the tailored group workshops can vary between two and two and a half hours, and can therefore constitute between 2–2.5 CPD units per participant. Typically, research refreshers are approximately an hour in length and are held at the LIV library. The length of the customised sessions may change, depending on the participant’s needs. As such, the price may also vary.
