New Applicants
Making an application - what should you download?

*Please note that, when you submit your Application, attached to this will be the Application itself and all of your supporting materials.

Your Statutory Declaration, Application and supporting materials may be submitted to the Institute electronically:

Word documents preferred;
The application fee tax invoice should be provided as a separate document so that it can be printed and then deleted.

Your Statutory Declaration, Application and supporting materials may also be submitted to the Institute in hard copy:

If your materials are submitted in hard copy they will be returned to you after consideration by the Council. The Institute will not retain copies, but you should retain your copy in the event the Institute has any later queries.

Making an application for upgrading - what should you download?

  1. The Application Statutory Declaration (relevant to your jurisdiction)
  2. The Application Form

Documentation submitted to the Institute with your original Application need not be included again; however, you will need to include details of studies completed since submission of your original Application, and supporting reference letters covering the intervening period. In respect to upgrading to Fellow, your supporting reference letters must address relevant periods of employment at Senior Law Clerk level.

Please note that, in most cases, upgrading to Fellow will require prior satisfactory completion of the Institute’s Examination in Legal Ethics (unless the Council resolves that a prior equivalent has been completed).

Application fee
Details of the applicable application fee, depending upon whether you are employed or are a full-time student, are set out in the application fee form.

Please note that, in some instances, the application fee is not required: for example, for delegates attending the annual Law Institute of Victoria Support Staff Conference or the annual Queensland Law Society Support Staff Summit, who apply within a certain time. Those persons currently enrolled with the Institute  who are seeking upgrading are not required to forward an application fee.

Statutory Declaration
The Statutory Declaration accompanies the Application. Applicants should choose the Declaration which applies to their jurisdiction.
