Make your points count with the LIV

It has been a disruptive year for the legal profession. There remain many unknowns about what the coming months, and 2021, may look like: you may be busy planning a return to work, taking a much-needed break or continuing to practice remotely.

One thing, however, remains certain: all lawyers with practising certificates need to complete 10 units of CPD before 31 March 2021*.

To maximise flexibility and support you in fulfilling your CPD requirements, the LIV has expanded its usual February and March CPD program to begin November 2020.

Stop, reflect and prepare with Part 1 of the LIV’s concentrated CPD program, from November to December 2020. Propel your practice forward with Part 2, from February to March 2021.

Part 1: November & December 2020
Stop, Reflect & Prepare

Developed in collaboration with LIV committees and industry experts, webinars occurring during Part 1 of the program feature opportunities to review legislative and procedural changes from 2020, refresh core knowledge or upskill in a new area, and enhance skills that extend beyond black letter law.

Part 2: February & March 2021
Propel Your Practice Forward

Part 2 of the expanded CPD program features the established CPD intensive and conferences you’ve come to expect, as well as a blend of live sessions and recordings of previous LIV CPD sessions.

The program features high-calibre speakers, interactive learning opportunities and expert panels discussions, all designed to help you navigate practice challenges, enhance the ‘soft skills’ that are critical to success and propel you and your practice forward.

The LIV’s CPD program doesn’t just satisfy your compliance requirements for the year, it provides quality education that you can apply to improve outcomes for your clients and support your practice for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are my continuing professional development requirements for the 2020/21 practising year?

If you hold a current practising certificate, you need to complete 10 hours of CPD activities each year. The CPD year runs from 1 April through to 31 March of the following year. LIV Accredited Specialists must complete an additional 2 CPD hours for a total of 12 CPD units between 1 April and 31 March to maintain accreditation. Eight of the 12 units must be in your area of specialisation.

    Find additional information on:

  • Have there been changes to CPD compliance requirements due to COVID-19?

For the 2019/20 and 2020/21 practising years the cap on private study of 5 hours has been removed due to face-to-face CPD events being cancelled and the need to practise social distancing and/or working remotely due to Covid-19.

10 units of CPD is still required to be completed by 31 March 2021, but can be done through private study of relevant audio/visual material.

During the 2020/21 practising certificate renewal you can tick the ‘Yes’ box even if, due to the special circumstances arising from COVID-19, you have exceeded the 5 unit cap on private study of audio/visual material to complete your required 10 CPD units. The PC renewal process will then proceed as normal.

Check the VLSB+C website for additional information on continuing professional development obligations.

  • How can I keep track of CPD points accrued through the LIV?

LIV members can keep track of CPD points with the LIV’s free online tracker tool, which is accessible through your MY LIV profile. For your convenience, CPD units accrued via live LIV CPD education activities are automatically added to your My CPD Record and can be relied on as evidence of participation. This online record can also be used to record non-LIV CPD activities, but you will need to retain evidence in support of those activities separately.

Please note: this service applies to live professional development only, such as Zoom webinars and face-to-face sessions. CPD points accrued through on-demand videos and other legal education products are not automatically added to your CPD record.

Please also note, CPD activities are self-assessed. Compliance area(s) indicated on the LIV website and in corresponding reading material are intended to serve as a guide only.
