Get Involved with the Commercial Law Section

In summary, the objectives of the LIV’s Commercial Law Section (CLS) are to:
  1. Represent the Law Institute of Victoria in consultations and reviews regarding all aspects of Commercial Law by developing submissions and policy positions
  2. Educate the wider legal profession about key and topical Commercial Law issues through all CLS Committees and the development of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars
  3. Share knowledge and experiences amongst Section members regarding Commercial Law issues
  4. Foster links with other professional industry associations in order to facilitate strong relationships and improve outcomes for the community.

How to join the Commercial Law Section

All LIV members are entitled to join the Commercial Law Section.

This can be done by logging into the LIV website (using your user name and password), clicking on the tab at the top of the page which has your name on it, then at the top of the page selecting the ‘My LIV Profile’ tab and clicking on ‘Membership’ from the dropdown options.

You will then be able to join the Commercial Law Section by selecting the “Commercial Law” option and then clicking ‘save’ at the bottom of the page.

By joining the Commercial Law Section, you will receive tailored information regarding Commercial Law and activities of the Commercial Law Section, as well as being able to attend and vote at the Commercial Law Section AGM. Joining the Commercial Law Section is also a prerequisite for joining any of the Section’s committees (including the Intellectual Property and Information Technology Committee). The Commercial Laws Section currently has the following committees and working groups:

  • Executive Committee
  • Business Law and Corporate Law Committee
  • Competition and Consumer Law Committee
  • Intellectual Property and Information Technology Committee
  • Not for Profit and Charities Law Committee
  • Sports Law Committee
  • State Taxes Committee
  • Taxation and Revenue Committee.

Competition and Consumer Law committee

The Competition and Consumer Law Committee focuses on legal issues relating to competition and consumer law. The Committee actively lobbies and makes submissions in these areas of law and formulates working groups to engage with particular aspects of the Committee’s work. In addition, the Committee focuses on broader legal community education and regularly facilitates guest speakers on emerging issues.

The Committee meets six times a year.
