Ethics and Professional Practice

Practice Management (formerly the Practice Support Line): Ring for information regarding starting, managing and closing a legal practice, human resources, day to day practice issues and requirements and obligations under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.

Members Advisory Service: This members only service provides confidential advice and support to practising members in relation to disciplinary complaints received against individual members or their practice and partnership disputes. The service is funded for up to three billable hours per member.

Judicial Commission of Victoria – Information for Legal Practitioners on Complaint Process

Information for legal practitioners about the Judicial Commission of Victoria and making a complaint about a judicial officer or non-judicial VCAT member is available here. The Law Institute of Victoria and the Bar Association can refer complaints on behalf of their members without disclosing the identity of the complainant. If you are a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and would like the Law Institute of Victoria, on your behalf, to refer to the Judicial Commission of Victoria a complaint against a judicial officer or non-judicial VCAT member, you may contact the President of the Law Institute of Victoria by telephone, email or in person to raise your concerns.

Practice Management Consultancy Service

Good practice management systems are essential for any law practice and support regulatory compliance, risk management and ongoing practice sustainability.

The Law Institute of Victoria recognises that even an experienced legal professional may need assistance throughout their legal practice journey to manage the day to day requirements of running a practice and complying with the Uniform Law.

The Practice Management Consultancy Service (PMConsult) is a new bespoke confidential service designed to assist practitioners to develop their practice and risk management skills and comply with the Uniform Law and Legal Profession Uniform Rules.

The service compliments the existing Practice Support Line and provides an additional layer of support via a one-on-one consultancy service which is designed to:

  • work with practitioners to strengthen areas of practice management
  • share good practice and identify strategies to mitigate practice risk
  • assist practitioners to develop a practice contingency or a succession plan
  • provide support to a practitioner struggling and in need of support
  • develop remedial action plans and a follow up program.

Trust Consultancy Service

The Trust Consultancy Service (TrustConsult) is a new confidential service designed to support legal practitioners implement sound management practices, or validate existing practices, in the way trust money and trust records are handled. All in the knowledge that the Uniform Law and Legal Profession Uniform General Rules requirements are met.

The services range from a telephone help line to a one-on-one consultancy service with an experienced practitioner with significant expertise in trust management who can:

  • assess the adequacy of the law practices’ record keeping systems
  • provide guidance on areas of improvement for trust records management and procedures
  • assist a practice to streamline processes and strengthen internal controls based on their individual practice profile
  • where necessary, work with the practitioner to develop a remedial action plan.
