What to tell people who think the world would be better without a legal profession

13 May 2015

Happy Law Week everyone! Together with the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne and the Chair of the Victorian Law Foundation, I spoke at the opening of Law Week. Afterwards, I was asked – why have a week celebrating lawyers at all? After all, the public prefers to joke about law-yers at the bottom of the ocean rather than celebrating the contributions of the legal profes-sion.

Secure your smart phone – and protect your clients

07 May 2015

By now, you will have worked out that I’m a privacy geek. It’s my specialist area of law. I’m also a huge social media fan. So, image how I felt when my Facebook account was hacked recently? How to teach your local MP about the legal system

29 Apr 2015

For many of us, becoming a lawyer was a way to make a positive difference to people’s lives. This often means helping people when they are at their most stressed, in crisis, with a problem that needs solving. We are great at helping individual clients and through the volunteer work at the LIV and CLCs, advocating for systemic change.

How to get out of a career rut

22 Apr 2015

I’ve been talking about change a lot lately – changes to the legal profession, with the increase in NewLaw firms and legal start ups; changes to the regulation of lawyers, with the introduction of the Legal Profession Uniform Law; changes to how we practise law, with the opportunities presented by technology.

Four tips for coping with sudden ethical dilemmas

 YL 22 Apr 2015

You probably think that you are pretty good at multitasking. You read up on the latest case law while you cook dinner, walk your dog, and de-leaf the roof gutters, and all at the same time! You would make a really good tightrope walker.
