Eight reasons why the experts recommend professional development beyond compliance

19 Feb 2014

When young lawyers think about professional development they often associate the term exclusively with ensuring that they obtain the necessary amount of CPD units per year and it can result in a scramble to meet this requirement.

Sure, CPD units are important. In fact, all legal practitioners who hold a Victorian Practising Certificate are required to complete 10 hours of CPD activities every CPD year (even if the holder practises interstate or overseas).

Five ways to be happier at work

19 Feb 2014

For those of you who know me, the following will come as no surprise.

I love my job.

Well, 80% of it, at least. There’s about 10% that’s a bit tedious and another 10% I’d like to change.

Sadly, I think that with the many challenges and changes facing our profession, it’s becoming harder for a lot of lawyers to love their jobs. They probably still love the law, but working as a lawyer brings with it so many pressures that have very little to do with the actual practise of the law.

Six ways to get more out of your day

12 Feb 2014

I’m now into my second month as President and, as you’d expect, it’s quite a challenge finding the time to fit everything in.

When we take on more or find ourselves in a particularly busy patch, it’s tempting to just add on a few hours at the end of the day. Sometimes that can’t be helped, but I’ve found there are a few things we can all try that will improve our productivity and hopefully get us back to a good work life balance:

So why tweet?

12 Feb 2014

My first exposure to Twitter was likely through seeing tweets of ‘celebrities’ on TV and MX on the tram. My perspective changed in 2009 when working on the ‘Hollywood’ vs iiNet copyright litigation, which became known on Twitter as #iitrial.  This hotly contested litigation became the first civil case to be live-tweeted in Australia.

Managing your inbox

29 Jan 2014

When I was starting out as a young lawyer the overflowing in-tray was an embarrassing tell-tale signal of either a busy or inefficient (or both) lawyer.

Now we have the luxury of a clean desk while all those random notes and correspondence are safely tucked out of sight from prying eyes and quietly accumulating in our inboxes. I can only wish.

I actually looked at my inbox earlier this week and discovered (to my slight horror) that I have more than 4000 lurking there. Sound familiar?

The benefits of networking beyond the legal profession

29 Jan 2014

We are told time and time again that networking is an essential tool for a successful career in any industry,  particularly the law. But who should we be networking with? Is it enough to network with other lawyers and potential clients or should we be thinking outside the box?

According to the only ‘strategic connector’ in Australia, Amanda Rose, young lawyers should be building connections outside of the legal profession for two important key reasons:

12 Dec 2013

As the YLS Manager for the last five years, I have been so lucky as I have undoubtedly had one of the best jobs in the law.
