Expressions of Interest

The Attorney-General, the Hon Martin Pakula MP, seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as a magistrate of the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria.

Magistrates are appointed by the Governor in Council, on the advice of the Attorney-General.

Expressions of interest are sought from people with substantial legal experience and knowledge of the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court, who have demonstrated a high level of integrity, sound judgement, interpersonal skills and communication skills, and the ability to conduct hearings.

Experience in dispute resolution would be advantageous.

Potential applicants are encouraged to consider the Framework of Judicial Abilities and Qualities for Victorian Judicial Officers, which is available at judicialcollege.vic.edu.au.

The required qualifications and conditions of employment are set out in sections 7, 9, 10, 16B, 16C and 16D of the Magistrates’ Court Act 1989. The remuneration of magistrates is set out on the Department of Justice and Regulation website under Judicial Salaries and Entitlements at justice.vic.gov.au.

Magistrates may be required to sit in regional Victoria for a period of up to three years.

All expressions of interest are treated confidentially and may be drawn upon on an ongoing basis as vacancies arise.

Those wishing to submit an expression of interest should complete the ‘Judicial Expression of Interest form’, which is located on the Get on Board website (getonboard.vic.gov.au – click on “vacancies – court appointments”).

Previous applicants who have already lodged an expression of interest via the Get on Board website will be considered, but should feel free to submit a new expression of interest if desired.

All expressions of interest are sought by midnight Tuesday 30 January 2018.
