LGBTIQ+ ‘Coffee Roulette’ brings students and professionals together

By Alex Moses

The LIVOut Working Group, which sits under LIV’s Diversity Committee, is the LIV’s LGBTIQ+ Working Group. The network aims to increase the profile and engagement of LIV members who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer; contribute to law reform and the provision of competent and effective service on issues concerning individuals who identify as LGBTIQ; as well as provide networking and mentoring opportunities for LIV members who identify as LGBTIQ.

In 2021 LIVOut is proud to announce its new initiative, ‘LGBTIQ+ Coffee Roulette,’ a program which brings together LGBTIQ+ identifying law students and legal practitioners through informal and casual coffee catch-ups. Aimed at increasing social interaction in the legal profession, creating networks and information sharing, LGBTIQ+ law students will be paired with LGBTIQ+ legal practitioners and participants will be introduced to arrange a virtual or in-person coffee catch-up. Coffee catch-ups can be used to discuss your experience as an LGBTIQ+ student or legal practitioner, to network, or anything in between.

We hope law students will gain:

  • networking opportunities
  • career and professional advice
  • a place to discuss shared experiences

We hope legal professionals will gain:

  • a chance to help others learn from your experiences
  • leadership, communication, and personal skills
  • exposure to new perspectives and ideas

Participants will be paired up by the LIVOut Working Group on the basis of their preferences for in-person or virtual catch-ups, legal interests and hobbies. The sign-up period will run from Monday 7 June 2021 until Monday 28 June 2021. If you are an LGBTIQ+ law student or legal practitioner and would like to get involved, please fill out the survey-form to sign up! SIGN UP HERE
